Your toilet is generally dependable, working as you would expect, but as they say, stuff happens. At some point or another, it is likely that you will have to deal with a clog, and this can feel like a plumbing emergency. While serious clogs will require professional intervention, most minor clogs can be cleared with a plunger. While plungers are pretty self-explanatory, there is some level of technique involved, and if you aren’t using it properly, you aren’t going to get very far in clearing the clog. For best results, keep these elements in mind next time you are using a plunger.
Use the right plunger
Plungers come in many different sizes, depending on the drain size, so you need one that is slightly larger in diameter than the drain. The two styles of plungers are standard and flange plungers. Standard plungers are cups that look like a half moon, while flange plungers include extensions that make them more effective.
Watch the water level
When you’re plunging, the water level is crucial. If there is too much water in the bowl, the plunging motion will splash water over the place, making a big mess. If the water is too low, you won’t be able to create a seal around the drain. The water should be just deep enough to cover the plunger cup. If the water is too low, add water to the bowl; if it is too high, bail some water out with a cup while wearing rubber gloves.
Create more pressure
To add more pressure to unclog your toilet drain, plug the other drains around you. Put stoppers in your sink and bath drain to create more pressure to unclog the toilet. If you don’t have stoppers for these drains, you can use wet washcloths.
Seal it
The key to successful plunging is to create a seal around the drain. You might try putting a little petroleum jelly around the rim of the plunger for added sealing power, but the most important step is to make sure that the rim is making contact with the toilet all the way around the drain and your handle is straight up.
Take the plunge
Once you have a secure seal, plunge your handle straight up and down for 30 seconds. You can do several rounds of this, and your clog should be clear.
