Conserving water is an important effort we must all join in on for the sake of the environment, but it is also beneficial for your finances. In our previous blog, we went over some ways you can save water in your bathroom. In this blog, we will go over tips for conserving water in the kitchen.
Fill your dishwasher
Good news if you hate hand-washing dishes: you have an excuse not to now! Hand-washing is not only more time consuming, it takes more water than the dishwasher. The key is to only run the dishwasher when you have a full load.
Invest in an energy-efficient dishwasher
If you really want to conserve water (and never have to hand-wash a dish again), invest in an energy-efficient dishwasher. While hand-washing can take 20 gallons of water for one load, energy-efficient dishwashers can use as little as 5 gallons.
Use your garbage disposal sparingly
When you need to dispose of food waste, you may instinctively put it down the garbage disposal. However, the garbage disposal requires the use of water, while your trash can or compost does not. Whenever you can, opt for these alternatives over the garbage disposal.
Reuse water
When you boil water while you are cooking, you should use as little as you can to conserve water. Additionally, you can use this water again by watering your plants with it. Just be sure to let the water cool first so you don’t put your plants in shock!
Wash produce in a bowl
Instead of pressure-washing your fruits and veggies with your faucet, fill a bowl with water and use a vegetable scrubber.
Keep a water pitcher in the fridge
Rather than running the faucet every time you want a glass of water, keep a pitcher of water in the fridge. This way, you won’t waste water waiting for the temperature to change because you will have cold water on hand.
Don’t defrost in water
Instead of defrosting food in water, think ahead and remove it from the freezer and place in the the refrigerator to defrost. Alternatively, use the microwave to defrost foods.
